CAGOP STATE TREASURER

"I never lived in the same town for more than four years until I moved to Santa Clara."

About Me
I come from a large family, being the oldest of five kids. My mother was a homemaker and then later a school librarian. My father was a chemical engineer. We moved around a lot as he was always in search of that perfect job opportunity. We lived in four different states - Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming. In fact, I never lived in the same town for more than four years until I moved to Santa Clara. Tragically, my father died as a result of an accident at work when I was thirteen and my baby sister was only six months old, leaving my mother to raise five kids on her own.
While it was not easy moving so frequently, I have a lot of great memories with a variety of experiences. I milked goats at the age of 13 to help my baby sister (it was the only milk she was not allergic to). I was a cheerleader in middle school. Yes, I still get very excited about things and jump up and down (see photo of FIFA reaction). One not so great memory was when I broke my nose as a high school freshman in gym class. I held many different jobs including a paper route. I worked at a fast food restaurant, a department store, an ice cream shop (my favorite), a grocery store and even assembled glider wings!!
A little known fact about me is that I can bake bread from scratch, even grinding my own flour. A not-so little known fact about me is that ice cream is my favorite food. When people ask what my favorite flavor is I can only respond with "YES!!"
I moved to Santa Clara in 1985 after graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in Chemical Engineering (following in my father’s footsteps) and marrying my amazing husband, Mark. We raised our daughters in the same neighborhood where we live today. They all attended Wilcox High School. Once they graduated, I was looking to get back into chemical engineering when the principal heard me teach a math class and suggested that I teach full time. I feel so blessed to be able to make a difference with Santa Clara's youth.

My mother passed away six days after I won my seat on the Santa Clara City Council in 2018. The last time I talked with her was to tell her I won. Unfortunately, she never lived to see me sworn in. She always encouraged her children to be involved in government, especially local, so I felt especially proud to be sworn in to my first term. I am happy to serve on the City Council.

Teaching at Wilcox
This is my 16th year teaching at Wilcox, and I am still having fun! I was bothered by the fact that we live in Silicon Valley but the school district did not have a computer science program, so I started one in 2010. Now at both Wilcox and Santa Clara High School we have three levels of courses and an elective option at the middle schools. I have worked with and/or trained all the computer science teachers. In 2014 some of my students asked me if we could start an after school Robotics program. With Suds Jain, we started an FTC robotics program which has grown to 2 competing teams, varsity and JV. Last year both teams qualified for regionals! Students work to design, build and program robots while learning leadership and team building skills. We host a robotics tournament every January which is open to the public to view for teams throughout Northern California. We host a lemonade and funnel cake booth at the Art & Wine Festival to earn money for the team and let the community know that we exist. Go Chargers!!

I became the faculty advisor for Service Club at Wilcox the first year I taught. I have helped many students in different service opportunities such as: Ulistac Nature Preserve, Second Harvest Food Bank, cleaning Calabazas Blvd and birthday parties for the children at the local battered women’s shelter.

Grandparent
I love being a grandparent! I have four grandchildren, an eleven year old grandson, an eight year old granddaughter and three years old twins (a boy and a girl). I feel like I hit the jackpot! Nothing beats the hugs and “We love you Grammy!” If I knew how much fun it is to be a grandparent, I would have done it first! (Ha Ha, it doesn’t work that way.) The pictures are from Great America and from a sweet trip to the Jelly Belly Factory this summer.

Spanish and Duolingo
I have always wanted to learn Spanish but did not have the opportunity as a student. My husband lived in Spain for two years and is fluent. About seven years ago I got serious about learning. I downloaded Duolingo and a few days ago I earned 2500 days in a row. My husband and I have been attending church in Spanish for 7 years. I do not understand a lot but I am trying and getting better each day. I was excited to sing in Spanish and for the last five years I have been taking organ lessons. (I already play the piano) Our congregation needed an organist so I am it! I am improving in both Spanish and organ playing. Estudio todos los días mi español. Quiero aprender más.

There is only one joke I can tell in Spanish. My Spanish is slowly improving.
I play the piano and organ in Spanish, also in Chinese.
Toco el piano y el órgano en espanol, tambien en chino.
